The term "Muscovy Duck" originates from the name of the region known as Muscovy (also called Moscow) in Russia. These ducks were first introduced to Western Europe in the 16th century and were named after the area from which they were believed to have originated. The Muscovy Duck (Cairina moschata) is not a true duck but rather a large, wild waterfowl species native to Mexico, Central America, and South America. Despite its name, it is believed that the domesticated Muscovy Ducks commonly found today do not have direct genetic ties to the region of Muscovy but were rather introduced to Europe from Spanish territories where they were called "Patos de la Florida" (ducks from Florida).
