The Kuiper Belt is a region of our solar system located beyond the orbit of Neptune and is defined as a circumstellar disc shaped region that is composed mostly of small icy bodies such as dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets. Named after Gerard Kuiper, who first proposed its existence in 1951, the Kuiper Belt stretches from about 30 astronomical units (AU) to 50 AU from the Sun.
The main feature of the Kuiper Belt is its abundance of small icy objects, known as Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs), which are remnants of the early solar system that never fully accreted into planets. These KBOs are composed primarily of rock and different types of ice. The largest and most famous KBO is Pluto, which was once considered the ninth planet before being reclassified as a dwarf planet.
The Kuiper Belt is believed to be a reservoir of primitive, unchanged material that has been relatively untouched since the formation of the solar system over 4.6 billion years ago. It is thought to provide valuable insights into the conditions and processes that led to the planet formation.
Exploration of the Kuiper Belt began with the historic flyby of Pluto by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft in 2015. This mission offered the first up-close view of an object in the Kuiper Belt and provided valuable data about its structure and composition. Ongoing research and future missions aim to further our understanding of this distant region and unravel the mysteries of our early solar system.

Etymology of KUIPER BELT
