The name "azurite" is derived from its deep azure blue color, which is its most distinguishing characteristic.
In terms of physical properties, azurite usually forms in masses or closely packed, tabular crystals. It has a relatively moderate hardness of around 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, rendering it susceptible to scratches. Its lustrous, vitreous to silky sheen further enhances its appeal.
Azurite is commonly found in copper ore deposits and is considered to be a secondary mineral. It typically forms through the oxidation of copper sulfide minerals, often alongside malachite, another copper carbonate.

Etymology of AZURITE
The word Azurite is derived from the Persian word lazhward, which means blue. This Persian term was derived from the Sanskrit term rajavarta, which translates to blue copper ore. Over time, the word was borrowed into Arabic as lazaward, and later into Medieval Latin as azureus. Eventually, azureus was anglicized into azurite.
